You've watched basketball, maybe you've played basketball... you're definitely familiar with the dribble. But how do you master the dribble? Here's five basketball dribbling drills/techniques you should practice, (and a special bonus move that can set you apart today).

1. Crossover Dribble

The crossover dribble is essential. You create a quick change of direction by shifting the ball from one hand to the other. Best time to use it? When you need to shake off a defender quickly and precisely.

2. Between-the-Legs Dribble

The between-the-legs dribble is exactly as it sounds. You pass the ball through your legs, shielding it from defenders, and preparing to change direction. Use this dribble when you're faced with a tight defense.

3. Behind-the-Back Dribble

Use the behind-the-back dribble when you want to change directions without exposing the ball to a defender. When performed correctly, you can shake defenders while maintaining control, and avoiding a steal.

4. Spin Move Dribble

A bit more advanced, you can use the spin move dribble to change direction while keeping the ball under control. Make sure to stay low. By doing so, you can get past those defenders who overcommit or attempt to trap you.

5. Hesitation Dribble

The hesitation dribble can break some ankles. Trick defenders into thinking you're stopping, only to rush past them. Create space, throw off a defender's timing. Hesitate. Then go.

Bonus: Pocket Dribble

Keep the ball in your pocket. Or close to your hip, slightly behind your back, that is. This can offer extra protection against aggressive defenders. Subtle, yet effective, pocket dribbling can help you avoid a steal or drive into traffic.
